Implant Supported Overdentures

What is an Implant Supported Overdenture?

An implant supported Overdenture is a denture that has been modified by adding attachments into the tissue side of the denture. These attachments are then snapped on and off the implant which allows the denture to be removed for cleaning or repair but prevents it from moving around in the mouth.

Why an Implant Supported Overdenture?

  • The option of leaving the roof of the mouth uncovered.
  • Increased stability and greatly improves the ability to chew food.
  • Greater confidence and self-esteem when in public.
  • Eliminate the need for creams and adhesives
  • Can relieve sores and/or tissue irritation

What is the process for receiving an Implant Supported Overdenture?

  1. The current denture is evaluated for fit and overall condition of the prosthesis.
  2. A panoramic x-ray is taken to determine the ideal location for placement of the dental implants in the jaw bone.
  3. Two or more implants are placed in the jaw bone in a simple surgical procedure with anesthesia if necessary.
  4. After a healing period the denture is seated into proper position and the Locator attachments are processed into the acrylic. The amount of retention can also be adjusted at this time.

What are Dental Implants?

An implant is an artificial tooth root replacement that is used to support single teeth or multiple teeth restorations to improve the function and quality of life for the recipient.

Dental Implants consist of a titanium screw that has a surface enhancement proven to increase the success rate of the implant attaching to the jaw bone.

  • Dental Implants can be traced back to Mayan civilization dating from about 600AD.
  • In 2007 approximately 1.6 million implants were placed in North America

Why Dental Implants?

Dental implants are now considered the standard of care for single or multiple tooth replacement. Without natural teeth or implants the bone shrinks and migrates to other areas of the body. Without bone height and volume the upper and lower denture have little structure to prevent movement and discomfort over time.

  • Today’s dental implants have a proven and well documented track record for over 40 years.
  • Dental Implants have a relative 10 year success rate of between 92 - 95%.

"After 25 years of wearing conventional dentures I was in to see Mr. Bywaters. He suggested that implants would stabilize the lower denture and give me a much more normal bite. That was 5 years ago and it has been terrific, it has definitely given me a higher quality of life."
